Abigail Keyes Brown

BROWN, ABIGAIL KEYES

(b. 1891) United States

A recognized painter of landscape, Brown was born in Rockford, Illinois and studied with Carl Krafft and William Owen. She was included in numerous exhibitions at the Rockford Art Association and the Art Institute of Chicago, winning awards in 1926, 1927 and 1928 for her landscapes. Records indicate that she was also included in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago between 1928 and 1941.

This painting, done in the mid twenties, combines the dabbled brushstroke and the pastel light of Impressionism with the atmospheric energy and infused emotion of many symbolist works. The location of this landscape is difficult to discern. It could be a stormy day at a Midwestern rural lake or riverside along the Eastern shore of the United States.
